To Kill a Mockingbird is an American classic, taught in schools across the U.S. and in other countries too, yet Harper Lee never wrote anything else. Perhaps she was afraid anything else would be a disappointment in comparison.
Finally, though, Harper Lee has another book coming out.
I hesitate to call it a second book, because it was actually written before To Kill a Mockingbird. In fact, it was this first book that brought about Mockingbird: The earlier book is about Scout as an adult, and the flashbacks to her childhood were so intriguing that Lee's editor encouraged her to write a book about the childhood instead.
In other words, it turns out To Kill a Mockingbird was actually more of a prequel, albeit to an unpublished book that most people didn't even know existed until now.
I am really excited to read the new book, called Go Set a Watchman, and I may even reread Mockingbird in the meantime, as I haven't read it in decades. I even have it now in electronic format, as I bought the ebook as soon as it came out last year.
What about you? Are you excited for Harper Lee's new book?
